Let's go!

Hastings Pier wins the prestigious 2017 Stirling Prize - RIBA's highest accolade.

Ecochoice has extensive experience in delivering specialist timber components to piers, pontoons and marinas.

Back in 2014 we were nominated the preferred supplier to Hastings Pier (now known as “the plank”!) where we delivered custom made joists, as well as all of the decking, handrails and steps.

The pier is over 11,000m2 – most of which covered with with 35x145mm FSC© certified Ekki planks – all of them supplied by Ecochoice Ltd.

Designed by dRMM Architects, the pier won the 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize against five other contestants.

According to The Independent, RIBA president and prize jury chairman Ben Derbyshire praised the structure as a “masterpiece of regeneration and inspiration”.

“The architects and local community have transformed a neglected wreck into a stunning, flexible new pier to delight and inspire visitors and local people,” he said.

Ekki (Lophira Alata) is timber species from West Africa that is a naturally durable, even in seawater contact. It is so heavy it sinks in water.

The Hastings Pier construction project required multiple deliveries, in precise timescales and lengths so as assist with rapid construction. Bundles had to weigh less than 1 ton to meet build restrictions. In the end, both the contractors and the final client (Hastings Pier Charity) were delighted with the outcome.
